Take the Best Route and Get There Safer with AR Maps for Smart Glasses

Most people can’t get around without their phone. This can be highly problematic when driving a vehicle – but unavoidable with current navigation apps. The fact is, smartphones are more efficient than we are. However, you need to look at your phone’s screen to take advantage. Evidently, this causes situational awareness problems. Luckily, accessing the many benefits offered by your phone is set to become easier – and safer – with upcoming augmented reality (AR) navigation applications for the Vuzix Blade®.

Google has already tested AR tech for its navigation app. However, all current versions require users to look at their phones.

With smart glasses, the phone becomes nearly inconsequential. No longer must commuters withdraw phone from pocket to navigate. Additionally, smart glasses eliminate the need for drivers to glance at their phone’s dashboard position.

No Mount Required - Navigate with Ease

Hands-Free Navigation for Safer, More Efficient Travel

Ultimately, AR navigation means drivers no longer have to take their eyes off the road. Eventually, AR Maps will project directions into smart glass lenses. Never before has their existed easier access to directions.

Consider the safety implications – in the US, distracted driving causes 1.6 million accidents annually. Evidently, most drivers don’t have phone mounts in their car. Consequently, they monitor directions by briefly glancing down - an act that puts lives in jeopardy.

This is incredibly problematic. Obviously, navigation technology needs to improve to a point where there is no need to take one’s eyes off the road.

No Need to Take Your Eyes Off the Road

A similar revolution came in 2010, with Bluetooth technology for hands-free calling. Since then, many countries have introduced legislation making hands-free calling mandatory.

The same thing could happen for smart glasses. Not having to take your eyes off the road to navigate has the potential to save lives. At the same time, with appropriate AR navigation tech, AR smart glasses could display helpful stats to drivers.

A user’s eye doesn’t need to adjust or re-focus when glancing back-and-forth between the image and what’s in front of them.

For example, large arrows could be digitally imposed onto the road. Additionally, your current speed and the local limit could hover in the corner of your eye. With these features, a driver has no excuse but to monitor their speed and stay inside the limit. Furthermore, there will be no need to remove your eyes from the road to confirm that next turn.

Vuzix’s Role in the Future of Navigation

Vuzix works toward creating smart glass solutions where navigation info can easily be displayed in a way that doesn’t obstruct one’s view. Meanwhile, the Blade’s overlaid images always in focus, meaning no images appear blurry for any length of time.

Ultimately, AR smart glasses will allow for less distracted, more aware drivers. Contrary to what some think, AR smart glasses can succeed at improving driving safety. Additionally, they offer tangible and appealing user benefits – as compelling as warehousing or enterprise field service applications.

AR navigation is in development for the Vuzix Blade®. We can’t wait until the technology becomes available to the public.
